The source of the material from which this journal has been compiled is a small pocket diary in which brief entries were made daily throughout the writer’s short spell on active service in the British Army in 1917.
The events and incidents, both trivial and tragic, and the names of those who shared in the writer's experiences are authentic.
15th April 1917 (Sunday)
With the approach of the fateful day preoccupation with preparation for the coming journey resulted in a sparsity of entries in the diary.
It is recorded that church parade was held at St Matthews and also, for what it is worth, my good friends Smith and Offer entertained me to a farewell tea at ‘Tickners’.
